Years after her mama's death, Afia overheard her Mom and Grampa discussing Gramma, sadly discussing whether or not it had been a good idea to ever let Afia or Kofi interact with her in the first place. Ama was the strident one, who occasionally wished her children never had to be exposed to that dogma. But Grampa was sympathetic, he knew Gramma a little better, after all, and tried to console Ama and her frustration. Looking back, the fallout after Mama's death had been very confusing to Afia. Even Kofi seemed to be mad at Gramma, although he still had more fondness for her than the rest of their family. The discomfort of it all weighed heavily on Afia's heart. She wished often it would just go away.
